What are Cosmoderm™ and Cosmoplast™?

Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast are sterile injectable liquids made of highly purified human collagen and are the first FDA-approved human collagen fillers commercially available. Collagen is a natural protein that supports the skin and lends it its shape. Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast thus can be used to correct wrinkles, reduce the appearance of acne scars, fill out cheek depressions, and enhance the lips.

How do Cosmoderm™ and Cosmoplast™ work?

Because they are made from purified human collagen, the body will more readily accept Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast than other facial fillers, reducing the risk of allergic reactions. In addition, clinical studies have shown that the frequency of adverse immune responses and rejections by the body with the use of Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast is less than 1.3%. Thus, a skin test prior to treatment with either of these cosmetic products is unnecessary.

What is the difference between Cosmoderm™ and Cosmoplast™?

Cosmoderm has a fluid consistency and is injected in the face into the chosen recipient site. Because of the thinner consistency Cosmoderm lasts around three months. But its fluidity allows it to be used in the correction of finer lines, such as crow’s feet and “smoker’s lines” around the mouth. Cosmoplast is slightly thicker, is used mostly for brow furrows and deep wrinkles, and lasts slightly longer than Cosmoderm (approximately three to six months). Both fillers contain lidocaine, which temporarily numbs the sites of injection and helps to reduce swelling.
